Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes. Atelier Cayelle jewellery is handmade in small batches in Southbank, Melbourne, Australia.

  • Yes. All Atelier Cayelle studs and some dangling earrings are made with nickel-free surgical steel backings, chosen for their strength, durability and comfort.

Surgical steel is commonly used for earrings because it is long-lasting and resistant to everyday wear, while nickel-free backings make the pieces more suitable for sensitive ears for many people. Each product description clearly states the type of backing or finding used, so the exact material can be checked before choosing a piece.

This makes Atelier Cayelle earrings a considered choice for everyday wear, and a thoughtful handmade jewellery gift when comfort and material clarity matter.

Yes. All our studs and most of our dangling earrings are made with surgical steel backings, chosen because they are durable, comfortable and suitable for sensitive ears for many people.

  • Coffee-stone is Atelier Cayelle’s signature handmade composite material, where recycled coffee grounds and real gold powder are bound into a lightweight and durable form.

The name comes from the raw material and the finish: solid, tactile and mineral-like, with the depth of roasted coffee.

  • Yes. Coffee-stone jewellery is designed to be lightweight, which makes it comfortable for earrings and everyday jewellery. Even our statement pieces are lightweight and easy to wear.

  • Yes coffee-stone sets into a very solid, wearable material, but the jewellery in itself should still be treated with care like any piece of jewellery.

  • Yes, a very small amount is used for binding. We use a BPA-free resin made from a by-product of the oil industry, a material that could otherwise become unusable, be burnt as waste or end up in landfill.

Through our low-energy, handmade process, we transform it into durable pieces designed for everyday use.

  • Coffee-stone was created for a finish we couldn’t find anywhere else: the depth of roasted coffee, the irregular texture of a mineral surface and the quiet glint of real gold.

Each piece has tiny variations in tone, texture and light.

  • No. Once the coffee grounds are transformed into coffee-stone, the finished jewellery does not smell like coffee. Unfortunately.

  • Coffee-stone is slow-made in small batches. The process includes collecting and preparing the coffee grounds, mixing the material, casting it, allowing it to set properly, then finishing and assembling each piece by hand.

The exact time can vary depending on the design and batch size, but it is not a mass-produced material and it takes at least five days to make.

  • Yes, our pieces are designed for everyday wear. To keep them looking their best, avoid showering, swimming or sleeping in them, and store them safely when not worn.

  • Keep your Atelier Cayelle Jewellery dry, avoid perfume and chemicals, and store it in its packaging or a jewellery box when not in use.

To clean it, gently wipe it with a soft, dry cloth.

  • Real gold powder gives coffee-stone its quiet luminosity. It catches the light in small, irregular ways, adding depth to the dark coffee texture without making the pieces feel overly shiny or decorative.

  • Atelier Cayelle uses 18K gold-plated findings on selected pieces to give the jewellery a more refined finish and a warm contrast against the dark coffee-stone.

  • Surgical steel is used for many earring backs and findings because it is durable, comfortable and suitable for sensitive ears for many people.

  • Because coffee-stone is handmade and made from organic material, each piece can vary slightly. The coffee grounds, gold powder and casting process create natural differences in tone, texture and golden glints. These variations are part of the material’s beauty.
